Newcomers to pig farming will encounter many difficulties such as:
Finding a source of quality pig breeds; how to build an effective pig farm; learning appropriate pig farming techniques for each pig breed;…

Pig farming is a very popular profession among Vietnamese farmers. However, not everyone takes care of pigs properly to bring the best quality meat.
I. Pig pen:
Regarding this factor, the first thing to mention is the location of the farm. That location must be in accordance with local planning or have permission from competent authorities. The distance from the farm to schools, hospitals, residential areas, national highways, and water sources is at least 100m.
It is necessary to ensure that the place where the pen is built is on high ground, not flooded, has a clean water source, and has the ability to treat waste according to regulations.
Farmers need to ensure the following factors: warm enough in winter and cool in summer; able to withstand weather impacts (storms, thunderstorms, etc.)
The pen needs to be designed to be suitable for distributing food and water so as not to waste food. Careful consideration should be given before designing and constructing to ensure adequate livestock needs while saving labor and materials.
II. Temperature and humidity:
Minimum temperature: 18-20 degrees
Required humidity: 60-70%
III. Walking space:
The barn space should be designed to be 4-5 square meters in size. Each pig should have a walking space of about 250 square meters. The purpose is to help pigs have space to move, avoiding cramped conditions that affect pig quality.
IV. Breeding stock:
Farmers must know how to choose pig breeds. The purchased pig breeds must have a clear origin, be healthy, have full quarantine papers and meet quality standards. Before joining the herd, the new pig must be quarantined for a certain period of time to monitor its physical condition.
Note that pigs should be raised with a high lean meat ratio, long body, wide buttocks, and slim belly. Avoid buying many types of breeds from many places, know the origin and weight of the pigs must be the same. There are 2 types of breeds for raising pigs for meat as follows:
- F1 hybrid pigs, which are foreign male pigs and domestic female pigs. This breed has the ability to gain weight at a fairly high level, with a high lean meat ratio
- Hybrid pigs with 2, 3, and 4 foreign bloodlines have higher hybrid advantages, so they grow very quickly, consume less food and have better disease resistance
V. How to care:
Pigs are like other animals, they need to eat and rest properly to develop.
For pig farming, piglets need to be vaccinated against dangerous diseases. In addition, creatures such as fleas and worms need to be periodically removed quarterly. Feed on a schedule of 2 or 3 times/day
It is necessary to keep the barn space clean and airy to prevent disease. If the floor does not have grooves, it should be covered with straw. The room should be ventilated once a day, and disinfected periodically once a month.
VI. Barn cleaning:
To bring about efficiency in barn cleaning, JVSF offers the solution of using Nema1, a product researched and developed by leading Japanese scientists. Helps to treat odors from barns and waste. Repel flies, mosquitoes, and insects around. Spraying and mixing drinking water for livestock helps increase resistance.
During the experiment, Nema1 was supported, trusted and used by farmers in the following way:
- Mix Nema1 evenly at a ratio of 10-15 grams (2-3 teaspoons) of Nema1 with about 10 liters of water to be able to spray on an area of 100m2
- Can be sprayed daily or adjusted depending on the level of odor.
- Spray evenly on areas where odors arise such as barn floors, wastewater ditches, areas where manure and wastewater are collected and treated.
The above is the basic knowledge that JVSF has compiled. Hopefully you have the necessary knowledge when starting to raise livestock.
