Improving Alum-Contaminated Durian Orchards in Cai Be, Tien Giang: Experience from Anh Xuan and NEMA2 Organic Carbon Solution

Durian cultivation, especially in the Mekong Delta provinces, always brings great economic potential. However, challenges from soil conditions, especially acid sulfate contamination, are always a constant concern for many gardeners. Mr. Xuan, the owner of two durian gardens in Hoa Khanh commune (5,000m²) and My Trung commune (13,000m²), Cai Be district, Tien Giang province, is also not immune to this situation.

Before finding an effective solution, Mr. Xuan’s durian garden encountered many serious problems:

  • Soil is heavily contaminated with alum: low pH makes it difficult for plants to absorb nutrients.
  • Nutrient deficiency: Young shoots dead, small leaves, pale yellow, dry and burnt spots, especially on the top leaves.

Previously, Mr. Xuan tried using lime powder to improve the soil. However, he realized that overusing lime powder can lead to negative consequences such as:

  • Soil hardening: The soil becomes hard and difficult to absorb water.
  • Root binding: Hinders the development of the root system.
  • Nutritional imbalance: Causes a lack of essential nutrients for the plant.
  • Destroying beneficial microorganisms: Weakens the soil ecosystem.

Aware of the potential risks, Mr. Xuan learned about and approached Organic Carbon technology, especially the Nema2 product from JVSF. He contacted JVSF and was advised to use Nema2 to replace lime powder, with the goal of improving soil pH and enhancing beneficial microorganisms.

Results exceeded expectations:

After only 2 weeks of being instructed by JVSF engineers to use Nema2, Mr. Xuan’s durian garden witnessed positive changes:

  • Significant improvement in the condition of acid sulfate soil.
  • Increasing the number of beneficial microorganisms in the soil.
  • Soil pH increased from 4 to 5.5-6.5, which is the ideal pH level for durian trees and many other fruit trees. This optimal pH level helps the plant absorb maximum nutrients and water, while enhancing its resistance to diseases and pests.

About 1 month after spraying Nema2, the condition of durian shoot death was also significantly improved. The leaves become lush green, new shoots grow strongly, and vitality is restored.

Mechanism of action of Organic Carbon:

The difference of Organic Carbon is not only in raising pH. Organic Carbon particles mainly decompose organic matter in the soil, creating an ideal environment for microorganisms to grow. From there, the plants can develop healthy roots and absorb nutrients well. Naturally, the plants become healthier, more resistant to diseases, sprout and grow well, bringing high economic efficiency to the organic farming model.

Mr. Xuan’s experience is proof that choosing an effective and sustainable soil improvement solution is a key factor to improve the productivity and quality of durian gardens, especially in the context of climate change and increasingly degraded land. The application of Organic Carbon technology, through the product Nema2, not only solves the problem of acid sulfate contamination but also contributes to building a healthy and sustainable soil ecosystem, towards a high-quality organic agriculture.
