>Conclusion on the importance of sustainable livestock farming

The world’s livestock industry generates:

18% of global greenhouse gasesfrom livestock, more than transportation.

73 million tons of solid waste & 30 million m³ of liquid wasteeach year, of which 50% is untreated before being discharged into the environment.

Livestock contributes 25.26% of Vietnam’s agricultural GDP, but also causes many negative impacts on the environment: 17.52 million tons of CO₂ emitted from livestock waste annually.

This article will analyze proven sustainable livestock solutions that help reduce pollution while ensuring productivity.

Environmental challenges of modern livestock farming

Modern livestock farming not only has impacts within the farm but also has a profound impact on the air, water resources, land and human health around. These issues require urgent attention and solutions.

Growing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock

The livestock sector accounts for total global greenhouse gas emissions as much as the entire transportation sector. Livestock is of particular concern because it produces three major greenhouse gases:

Methane (CH₄) accounts for 44% of total livestock emissions, and is 30 times more potent than CO₂. Mostly produced by livestock digestion. Nitrous oxide (NO) contributes 29%, making it 265 times more potent than CO₂. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) accounts for the remaining 27%. Livestock alone accounts for two-thirds of livestock emissions, with 30% of global methane coming from ruminant digestion. In 2019, the US livestock industry emitted 241 million tons of methane, more than the combined oil and gas industries.

Water Pollution from Animal Waste

Livestock pollutes water sources worldwide. Each year, rivers receive about 22 million tons of dissolved nitrogen and 1.8 million tons of dissolved phosphorus from livestock. Livestock waste also contains pathogens (E. coli), hormones, antibiotics, and heavy metals such as zinc and copper, which are harmful to aquatic ecosystems.

When organic waste from livestock enters rivers and lakes, it reduces the amount of dissolved oxygen, killing fish and other aquatic organisms. Excess nutrients also lead to algal blooms, which produce toxins that make drinking water dangerous.

Land degradation and deforestation

Livestock farming occupies 30% of the world’s land area, with livestock farming responsible for 80% of the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Deforestation for grazing land releases 340 million tonnes of CO2 each year, equivalent to 3.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, overgrazing degrades grassland ecosystems, causing soil erosion, reduced fertility and loss of long-term crop yields. Health risks to surrounding communities include:

Intestinal diseases due to water pollution.

Respiratory problems due to inhalation of ammonia and fine dust.

Risk of disease transmission from animals to humans human, typically swine flu, avian flu.

In addition, water contaminated with nitrate from livestock waste can cause “blue baby” syndrome (methemoglobinemia) and is even linked to thousands of cancer cases each year.

Effective waste management solutions

Livestock waste can become a valuable resource instead of remaining an environmental hazard. What is the way to implement environmentally friendly livestock renovation?

Biogas system: Converting waste into energy

Biogas technology converts animal waste into renewable energy through anaerobic digestion. Bacteria decompose organic waste in an anaerobic environment. This process captures methane instead of releasing it into the atmosphere (reducing greenhouse gas emissions).

A biogas system can reduce emissions by the equivalent of 50 tons of coal per month.

Processing 100 tons of organic waste per day can provide electricity to 800 – 1,400 households annually.

Composting for Organic Fertilizer

Well-managed compost turns livestock manure into stable, nutrient-rich soil amendments. The process works best with a C/N (carbon to nitrogen) ratio of 25:1 to 30:1 and a moisture content of 50-60%. Temperatures reaching 55°C (131°F) for at least three days effectively eliminate pathogens, weed seeds, and flies.

This process reduces waste volume by approximately 30%, allowing for more efficient transportation and application.

>>>See more applications of Organic Carbon for composting

Organic carbon in environmental treatment

Organic carbon plays an important role in environmental improvement due to its ability to promote microbial activity and support the biodegradation cycle. Organic carbon compounds such as humic acid, lignin and cellulose help improve soil, water and microflora quality.

Odor treatment: Organic carbon helps eliminate odors from livestock activities, creating a fresh living environment and increasing resistance for livestock.

Insect repellent: The product has the ability to repel flies, mosquitoes and other insects by natural mechanisms, minimizing the risk of spreading pathogens.

Support beneficial microorganisms: Organic carbon promotes the growth of beneficial microorganisms, inhibits harmful microorganisms, contributing to improving livestock health and livestock efficiency.

>>> See more applications of Organic Carbon in livestock farming

Biological treatment using microorganisms

Microorganism technology (EM) is the use of beneficial bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms to speed up the decomposition of waste.

Mechanical separation and filtration system

The mechanical separation system helps divide the manure into solid and liquid components, making waste management easier. Advanced separation systems can recover up to 84% of organic matter, 56% of nitrogen and 91% of phosphorus from livestock waste.

Screw presses are a cost-effective solution, suitable for small and medium-sized farms.

Centrifuges have higher separation efficiencies, especially for phosphorus removal, but operating costs can be five times higher than screw presses.

The application of these systems significantly improves downstream waste treatment options while minimizing environmental pollution.

Practice scientific feeding

Optimizing animal nutrition plays an important role in protecting the environment during livestock production, but many people ignore this strategy.
