Odor-blocking nets are currently one of the popular measures to help improve the environment in livestock farming. This solution is often reported by farm owners to environmental protection agencies, and environmental agencies often require farm owners to implement it to minimize the impact of odors on residential areas.
The livestock industry in general and pig farming in particular are expanding and developing strongly to meet the growing demand for food due to the increase in the world’s population. Currently, farm investment is shifting strongly from the household farming model to the industrial farm model, mostly large-scale concentrated farm models with a capacity of up to tens, even hundreds of thousands of commercial pigs per year. This continuous increase in livestock scale is necessary, but it also leads to consequences that directly affect the surrounding living environment such as air pollution, water pollution…
Currently, Vietnam has gradually perfected policies and sanctions to punish production activities that directly affect the environment. The pressure on the Management Agency as well as the owners of large-scale pig farms is how to both produce and bring about a sustainable environment without affecting the surrounding environment and ecological balance. When a farm is penalized according to regulations, there must be an immediate solution to remedy the consequences. So somewhere, there needs to be a solution that meets all the factors: Safety – Environmental friendliness – Reasonable cost. While there is no radical solution, one of the popular measures currently used is to install a screen at the end outside the barn (after the exhaust fan).

This method is basically using a mesh with very small holes made of non-woven fabric or poly material, wrapped behind the exhaust fan from the inside out (illustration), to be able to prevent or disperse odors in the short term, in some cases, also combined with spraying essential oils in the blocked area. The main purpose of this method is to reduce the spread of odors from the farm to the surrounding environment.
Advantages of the Mesh solution behind the fan
This is an easy-to-implement measure, which can be a quick solution that the farm can apply immediately. This measure helps prevent the odorous air inside the barn from following the natural wind flow immediately, but is interrupted.
It is a quick and affordable measure that can be quickly deployed in an emergency.
Some issues to note about the odor barrier solution
The net can only settle a small part of the odor due to the spraying of water or essential oils, causing a few odor molecules to dissolve into mist, but most of it is still released into the air, although it is blocked and not blown away immediately, but then accumulates and still spreads to surrounding residential areas, so the odor treatment problem is almost ineffective.
Installing an additional mesh behind will block and affect the air flow inside the barn, affecting the ventilation and breathing ability of pigs, so there are some places where the installation is completed but cannot be used, because the fan was not originally designed for this purpose. If it is still possible, all fans must be turned on all the time (instead of just partially when it is cool), which significantly increases electricity costs as well as equipment wear.
In some cases, farms are advised to spray essential oils to deodorize this screen area, but this is considered wasteful, this essential oil spraying needs to be done full-time 24/7, bringing a considerable cost burden because the cost of these essential oils is quite high. In addition, essential oils only have the effect of covering up odors for a short time as well as deceiving the sense of smell in a narrow space, while distant areas have no effect and are still affected by the smell, because the essential oils basically do not have the effect of decomposing odor-causing gases but only deceiving the sense of smell.
This method is widely popular, often because environmental management agencies pressure farms to have an immediate solution, to urgently solve the problem that the community complains about. But with the above disadvantages and the odor problem not being completely resolved, it will cause waste of investment as well as business efficiency and animal health.
